More than simply planting in glass

Learn the foundations of a living terrarium

A successful terrarium is about more than arranging attractive plants inside glass. Its growing environment needs to suit the plants and the way the vessel is designed to function.

During the workshop, you will explore the fundamentals of:

  • Layers and growing materials

Understand the role of the growing layers and how the materials support the planted environment.

  • Plant selection and placement

Learn how to position plants to create a balanced miniature landscape.

  • Moisture and the water cycle

Discover why water balance matters in a closed terrarium and how to recognise when conditions may need attention.

  • Light and placement

Understand the importance of suitable light and choosing a suitable location for your finished terrarium.

  • Ongoing care

Take home practical guidance to help you observe your terrarium, recognise changes and care for it over time.

The aim is to help you leave with both a finished terrarium and a better understanding of the living system you have created.

Frequently Asked Questions

Event FAQs

  • What if I need to cancel?

Please review the workshop cancellation, transfer and refund terms before purchasing. The applicable terms should be linked directly beside the booking button or within the booking information so you can read them before payment.
  • How do I reserve a limited workshop seat and secure my booking?

Purchase your ticket through the above linked product and complete payment of the ticket price. For eft payments, a 24 hour provisional hold is allowed for payment to reflect in The Bottled Garden (Pty) Ltd’s bank account and/or pdf proof of payment is sent to hello@thebottledgarden.co.za

Your booking is confirmed once payment has been received and/or verified. An enquiry alone does not reserve a place.

  • Will my terrarium look exactly like the workshop photographs?

Not necessarily, but the package will be equal or higher value. Vessel shapes, moss and plant species, and hardscape selections depend on availability, and promotional images are representative but if a material change affects your planned build, you will be contacted for agreement before proceeding.
  • Do I need to bring my own glass vessel or tools?

No. Your glass vessel and the core materials and components for your build are included. Specialist tools and aprons are provided for use during the session, as well as optional disposable gloves.

  • What is included in the ticket price?

Your full ticket includes the glass vessel, plants from a wide and curated selection, and substrate, reservoir and hardscaping materials, a live demo and practical step-by-step instruction with details on the natural processes that make layering important, use of specialist tools, gloves and aprons, coffee on arrival and a light lunch to finish the session, where we can discuss practical after-care advice for the finished builds.

  • Do I need experience making terrariums to attend a workshop?

No! The workshop is designed for beginners and beginners are welcome. You will receive guided instruction throughout the build and practical tips to help you relax, get creative with your design, and enjoy the workshop.
